Clean up at Magnolia eyesore underway

September 1st, 2008 · View Comments

The clean up is underway at this house on 34th Ave West.  Here is how it looks today.  Much better than this shot we took yesterday.

As we first reported, the man who lived here has been evicted for failing to pay taxes.  He left behind piles of garbage and junk in the home he had lived in since the 1950′s.

We talked to the new owners of the house today and they tell us they are making progress.  They estimate they have already removed over four thousand pounds of debris from the home.  Most of the main rooms are clear and the house actually looked surprisingly good when we took a tour inside.

The new owners are long time Magnolia residents who plan to fix up the home and keep it in their family.  They still have lots to clear out, including the attic and backyard.  The house has been without water for a long time and they are having it hooked up tomorrow.

They bought the house when it was in forclosure and they say the knew it was bad but they were still surprised by the piles of refuse when they got their first look inside.

The new owners say they have experience fixing up homes, they just helped their son overhaul a home on the eastside. They plan to get rid of the Confederate flag as soon as they can figure how to get the giant fiberglass flagpole down.

We understand that the previous owner is now living with relatives.

Besides being a blight on the community this guy’s delusional:

This man was obviously mentally ill and having a terrible time living on his own. We need to be less judgemental and more caring as a community. Though he was not the friendliest of people and had expressed views that were in contrast to most of ours, he was clearly in a bad way and deserves our prayers. I am glad a family is renovating the home as it was very close to our school and parks.

Thank god this filthy pig is out of our neighborhood.

We owned the house next to Paul’s (on the corner) from 2000 to 2004. Although his house and property were always completely messy, we never had a problem with him. He was always polite and friendly, and often loaned us gardening tools or helped us with heavy lifting jobs. We had a small baby at the time and he always kept his dogs well-leashed, and after we asked him once, he never made loud noises after 8 pm (our son’s bedtime). He was respectful of our property line and never let his “stuff” cross over onto our side.

It’s true that he was eccentric and had fallen on hard times, and certainly hung out with unsavory people. Things frequently showed up on his property that were probably of dubious origin, and we often smelled pot. However, many in the neighborhood accused him of drug-dealing and I can say that we had no evidence of that the whole time we lived there (and we’re not naive; we HAVE lived next to drug dealers and we know the goings-on).

In fact, due to Paul’s tough reputation in the neighborhood, his stash of guns and his Dobermans, we ironically felt quite safe knowing that his presence next-door protected our home from break-ins and theft too.

I’m not surprised to see that his house was eventually foreclosed on. He obviously had no steady income and his health was poor – he spent most of 2003 in a wheel-chair after suffering a stroke or heart attack. I’m glad that it sounds like he’s being looked after – probably by his daughter who is very sweet and looked after him a lot while we lived there.

I am glad that the house will be cleaned up though. We considered buying it ourselves but Paul was insistent that he wanted to remain there until he died – it was his mother’s house. We look forward to seeing the improved street next time we visit (we’ve moved back to Canada!).

Best of luck to those that bought it.
