Magnolia bike rider rant

September 14th, 2008 · View Comments

In the Seattle Times popular Rant and Rave section a bicyclist shares a problem encountered while riding in Magnolia:

“To the man in the silver SUV who tried to intimidate me as I rode my bike down Condon Way in Magnolia at 6 p.m. Sept. 3. You tailgated me, crowded me and then laid on your horn right as I was about to pass a car parked on the right. Then you slowed down next to me to tell me I was holding you up. Your excuse was that you were trying to get to the pool, you were already late and that I was slowing you down. What you did was dangerous and illegal. Maybe you should read up on traffic laws before you threaten a bike rider again.”

Anybody else having problems sharing the road out there?

Yes, Magnolia is full of crazy drivers. I’m so sick of people racing through the intersections that don’t have any stop signs. The law is the same if it was a 4-way stop. At least slow down and make sure no one else is coming. I’m scared to walk around b/c I don’t know who is going to stop fo me and who is going to run me over.

Oh ha. Where do I start? Discussing the issues between bike riders and drivers is a never-ending thicket of stories, from both sides.

I ride from Magnolia (on the ass side, also known as near Interbay) to Capitol Hill every day and I can tell a story about 3 times a week. On the other hand, I am constantly amazed at the number of riders who don’t wear a helmet or blatantly break the law.

There’s a need for a lot of education, on both sides of the issue, as well as a need for everyone to calm down and be civil. You’ll get where you are going in the end. There’s no need to put someone’s life at risk, really. Is there?

Sounds like a typical Republican jerk driving the SUV. They do that to other automobile drivers too.

Though I’m too out of shape to ride a bike, I have noticed how Magnolians seem to be in a big hurry when I’m out driving. They often ride my bumper even though I’m doing the speed limit (or maybe a bit over). I’m sure they’re all on important missions, but really think we should all slow down a bit!

magnolia drivers may think ALL bikers belong to critical mass. so they take it out on everyone.
