UPDATE: The campers at Nickelsville tell us tonight that they have been given until Wednesday at 12pm to vacate their encampment in Discovery Park. Attorneys for the Northwest Justice Project who are representing the campers had discussions with City Attorney Tom Carr’s office today. They claim they were told the earliest time the city would try to sweep Nickelsville would be noon on Wednesday. We are working to confirm with the city and will let you know when we hear from them.
Nickelsville organizers will not seek a temporary restraining order on Monday now, though they say they may still go to court before the new Wednesday deadline.
The other development is that Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development has now issued a Land Use Notice of Violation to the camp. It says that Nickelsville must leave by 5:00 PM Monday or face penalties of $150.00 a day. The fines would be levied against the people responsible for the tent city camp including SHARE/WHEEL and organizer Scott Morrow.
SHARE/WHEEL and Morrow have organized other tent city encampments for the homeless in the area. This article in the Seattle Weekly is an interesting look at their activities. (Thanks for the link GIZ )
