Magnolia is near and dear to my heart as my family lived just on the other side of the ravine near the entrance to this beautiful park.
Scott Morrow, the founder of SHARE/WHEEL currently operates the two tent cities. Tent City 3 is currently located at a church in Shoreline and Tent City 4 is on Mercer Island.
Through media (print/television) we have been able to identify 12 “residents” of Nickelsville as being residents of Tent City 4. They were brought over from that shelter for the “cause”.
Tent City 3 & Tent City 4 began in much the same fashion as Nickelsville. In 2004, Scott Morrow and gang made threats to open Tent City 4 in King County Parks of their choosing if King County Executive Ron Sims would not give them public land for a “shanty town” (just like what they want now.) At that time they made the same claims about shelters being full and not enough room, etc. Interestingly enough, the tent cities are not always full. Each Tent City houses up to 100 people. Ron Sims originally gave into these threats and planned to locate the “tent city” on the Brickyard Park and Ride site in Unicorporated King County. With little notice, schools and neighbors were outraged and they went to court to prevent this from happening. Scott Morrow and his tent city were not allowed on the Brickyard site and instead went to St. Brendan’s in Bothell. Thus began Tent City 4 and years of court battles with each and every community, as the Tent City 4 moved every 90 days, often illegally without permits. To date, Bothell, Woodvinville, Bellevue, Kirkland and Mercer Island have all found themselves in court over this issue.
In fact, you should know that after an illegal Tent City 4 move by Scott Morrow to the Northshore United Church of Christ in Woodinville the City of Woodinville went to court and that case has wound its way through various courts and was last heard in the Washington State Supreme Court, May 2008. A ruling in that case is expected at anytime. The City of Woodinville won several lower court rulings against SHARE/WHEEL and the church. Many of the issues are similiar to what is playing out now in Magnolia.
It’s good to know and have some history on who you are dealing with. Scott Morrow and SHARE/WHEEL make false claims that are very often reported and never verified by the main stream media. Such as Leo Rhodes is “homeless” and living in Nickelsville, when that facts are Leo Rhodes is an activist that is homeless by choice for over 20 yrs, 9 of which he has spent living in SHARE/WHEEL’s Tent Cities. Up until last week when this Nickelsville charade began, Leo had been living since May 2004 in Tent City 4. This can be verified here in this Real Change article:

There seems to be some conflicting information out there regarding Nickelsville and the United Indian Tribe that runs the Day Center. Media reports originally quoted a spokesman from the tribe as saying they were “surprised” by the camp and didn’t know they were coming. They also had said that they didn’t have permission to allow them to stay, as the property was leased from the City of Seattle.
Now comes a blog posted by Tim Harris, editor of the homeless paper Real Change and supporter of SHARE/WHEEL and Nickelsville.
He makes some claims that are counter to statements that have been made and he also indicates that Monday’s hearing is still on.
