Tribe builds teepee at homeless camp

October 5th, 2008 · View Comments

During our latest visit to Nickelsville, the residents showed us a large teepee that was built in the center of the encampment. They say that representatives of the United Tribles of All Nations set up the teepee and hosted a feast for them as a show of solidarity.

The organizers at Nickelsville claim that the tribes have offered them sanctuary on the land behind the Daybreak Star Cultural Center.  It is not clear what that means since the tribes lease that land from the city.

As we have reported, the group now appears to have until noon on Wednesday to stay at the encampment before the city forces them off the property. About 60 homeless men and women are living there in tents.

Perhaps a call to the United Indians for All will clear this confusion up. Marty Bluewater was quoted last week in several papers as well as interviewed on television. At that time he stated that he did not know the Nickelsville camp was going to pitch tents on their land and that he only found out by seeing the media reports and a call from his security guard. He went onto say that the tribe would not be able to give permission, as the land was leased back to them from the City of Seattle.
These latest claims being made by Nickelsville contradict Mr. Bluewater’s earlier statements.

A phone call to Mr. Randy Lewis at the United Indians for All Tribe reveals some further inaccuracies from representatives of Nickelsville.
Mr. Lewis stated that the tepee “is not an endorsement” of Nickelsville nor is it a “rubber stamp” giving them permission to be there.
He went onto say that the UIFA had “no legal right” to give Nickelsville permission to be there as the land is leased to the tribe from the City of Seattle.
Scott Morrow and SHARE/WHEEL have a history of reporing information that when verified can be proven to be false.
Mr. Randy Lewis of UIFA can be reached at 206-285-4425.

Giz, we heard you the first 20 times. Obviously you’re right and they actually built the teepee to scare off the homeless.

You win, now stop saying the same thing over and over.
