Moving day at Nickelsville

October 10th, 2008 · Comments

Things appear to be going smoothly as the campers at Nickelsville move out of Discovery Park.  They are loading their tents and gear into a large truck and have pretty much cleared all the tents out of the area.

The group is tight lipped about their next location but it appears they are headed to a church in the University District.

No police officers or city officials were on hand when we took these pictures.  All the TV stations were covering the story.  Here are the pictures we just took at the camp.

Here is a link to the KING 5 story this photojournalist was shooting at the scene.

We will head back this afternoon to see how the area looks after the group is gone.

Is there a better solution? I'd love to hear it.

The U-district is exactly where they are headed as noted here on King 5 today:

As I said yesterday when I gave the heads up on this via the Seattle P.I. link, Scott Morrow and SHARE/WHEEL are predicatable at this point. Read the history of Scott and Tent City 4 and how it came about. Exactly the same way this is happening. Now we'll have Tent City 5! Scott Morrow will use the church as a shield in an attempt to hide behind RLUIPA so that the City of Seattle can't close them down.
Keep in mind that the City of Seattle allows SHARE/WHEEL to operate their current Tent City 3 under a 2002 consent decree, which allows for only one Tent City to be within the City of Seattle limits at a time. Currently Tent City 3 is in Shoreline.
They'll get their media coverage today, as expected. They timed their move to the 12p.m. news.
As for what this does for the homeless in the end.... NOTHING!
Once again, by failing to provide these people with transitional services and throwing them in tents to further his political agenda, Scott Morrow and SHARE/WHEEL are perpetuating the cycle of homelessness, one tent at a time.
