Veteran restaurant operator Jon Davis thinks the area around Thorndyke is ripe for growth and that’s why he decided to open his new restaurant on the Thorndyke strip two blocks south of Dravus at the 20th Ave West intersection.
The Fightin’ Cock Roaster serves chicken and sandwiches in a cozy location that is mostly take-out with a small counter. The restaurant has been open for just nine days but already they are finding fans of the menu that is inspired by Davis’s travels around the world. There are influences from Thailand, Cuba and Mexico.
Ursula Chapman lives nearby and she was anxious to try the menu that features chicken marinated in lime, garlic and spices for one full day before it is grilled on an open flame, finished in a moisture preserving roaster and then pan fried for flavor. The sandwiches are served on a fresh baked Vietnamese roll.
We tried the entree shown above that includes a half chicken, beans and rice, salad and a roll. The chicken was moist and tasty. We were impressed with the large portions and the flavors were great. You can choose between red or black beans and the rolls are fresh daily.
The house specialty is a Mojo sauce with bell peppers, chilis, onions, garlic and citrus. It comes on a sandwich or over rice with chicken or tofu. Prices are reasonable with sandwiches at $4.95 and meals at $7.95.

The grand opening is planned for November 15. We predict that this little restaurant will be a big hit once Magnolia residents get a taste of the menu that Jon Davis and his team have put together. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
The restaurant is open from 11am to 9pm daily. You can call ahead at 206-282-2663. The Fightin’ cock Roaster is located at 2809 Thorndyke Ave West.
