Magnolia bridge incident

January 7th, 2009 · View Comments

Here is a mystery from Magnolia Voice readers Chris and Teresa.

On Sunday night, January 4th during the snow event, my wife was driving down the Magnolia bridge when she ran over an object completely obscured by snow located directly in the drive lane.  It turns out, this basketball-sized, solid steel object totaled our 2007 Honda, tearing apart the engine and transmission as it drug under the car.

I wonder if any of your readers could identify it for me.  I would like to track down the owner or just find out what it is.  Plus, I think everyone should be reminded of the unseen hazards in the road that snow can obscure.

Here are the pictures of the object that wrecked their car.

Anybody have any ideas about what it might be?

maybe its a piece off a snow plow.

  • Jane

Wow! Looks like something from a truck.

  • Newsie

I agree with David. It looks like a snow plow shoe.

We sent the pictures to Seattle Dept. of Transportation to see if they had any ideas…will let you know if we hear back from them. They should be able to tell us if that is a part from a snow plow.

something from a plane i suspect.

I would like to see more pictures from different angles. Another idea is that it could be part of the bridge itslef. If you notice on the bridge, there are lot of metal spacers, this looks kind of like the joint unit — and I could totally imagine one of those pieces being ripped off by a plow.

It looks like a custom foot…as seen at the end of bracing arms for any number of construction machines. Backhoe, crane, whatever…

Good luck. You have your work cut out for you.

I think boardbrown has it. I just had a friend tear up his sportcar on a u-joint from a semi during this snow craze.

I’ll bet it is a container lock from a truck carrying a container. The second photo shows the cam to lock the container to another container or a truck bed.

That’s definitely a plow shoe off of a commercial plow. SDOT is the culprit you’re looking for.

Even if the source could be identified good luck on any law suit you might hope for. The firm I worked for had a case where the entire axle fell of a city garbage truck on the freeway and the women driving behind was killed. We lost the case and her family got nada. You would have to prove willful negligence which would be nearly impossible and mitigated by the weather over which the owner had no control. Basically….. it is your responsibility to watch what might be on the road at any time and use due caution when conditions are difficult, such as when there is snow covering the road.

I feel for you and wish you luck in trying to get some kind of remuneration from the City if it is off their plow. Definitely going to be challenging.

Wasn’t it the other day in the Times they had an article on SDOT’s Crunican….

City Council members on Monday began their review of the city’s response to the snowstorm by grilling Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) Director Grace Crunican about her agency’s role in bus-service problems and her decision to leave town for Christmas while much of the city was snowbound.”

    That’s a Classic!
