Viaduct to be replaced by tunnel

After years of discussion, the Alaskan Way viaduct will be replaced by a bored tunnel, reports the Seattle PI. The newspaper is reporting that the city of Seattle, King county and the state have all agreed on the tunnel option.

According to the paper, “the tunnel would be paid for with roughly $2.8 billion that the state set aside for the project. The surface street elements, including a waterfront park would be paid for by the city. The capital and operating investments in transit would be covered by King County.” The deep-bored tunnel is similar to the “cut and cover tunnel” option Mayor Nickels proposed two years ago. It will have two highway lanes going in each direction with a 50 mph speed limit. Just one month ago the options were narrowed from eight to two, neither of which were the tunnel option.

If you read all the way through this it looks like this might be bad for Magnolia and Ballard since there is no exit point like there is on the current one. Not sure what that means for us?

I think it’s time for Magnolia, Ballard and QA residents to push hard for an entry point that works for all of us….since we are a huge component of current viaduct users.

I live in Ballard and use the viaduct all the time, but I get on at 39th Street. I think the new proposal is great and hope that the usual “it has to be my way” crowd doesn’t kill this proposal.

Magnolia and Queen Anne residents will have easy access to the 99 South corridor near the stadiums, as Alaskan Way and Western Avenue will be greatly improved through the waterfront area.
