Magnolia residents have started a petition to get the US Postal Service to restore two drive up mailboxes with twice daily pick up in The Village.
We found the petition at Ace Hardware seeking to restore the service available prior to the addition of the townhomes behind the Post Office. When construction started on that site, the two drive through mailboxes were removed. One drive though mailbox was added in Magnolia Park but pick up at that location happens just once per day.
We got an email from a reader who calls herself ‘Magnolia’s Mad Mailer’ who has also been pushing for more mail service in The Village. She says the mailbox in the park was only added because of her persistance:
Until I made a fuss and printed up flyers for people to call there were no plans to put access to any drive up mailboxes. I suggested the spot where the drive up mailbox now sits and they told me over and over they could only manage one pick up daily! So they replaced two boxes behind the post office with several daily pick ups with one box that frequently is overflowing that is only picked up at 12:30. They have a 5PM pick up on Thorndyke so why couldn’t the same truck do that box by the tennis courts?
Isn’t someone else out there angry as I am at the almost constant double parking in front on the Post Office? I took this drive up mailbox project on not only for myself but for the merchants of Magnolia who need parking for their patrons and the elderly who can’t just pop out of the car to mail a letter.
The Mad Mailer supports the petition drive but did not start it. There is no information with any contact information on the petition. Let us know in comments if you have any more details and what you think about the effort for more mail pick up.
