Seattle Storm moving to Interbay

February 12th, 2009 · 8 Comments

The Seattle Storm announced today that the team will move its headquarters to Interbay next month.

“We look forward to becoming a member of the Interbay community and celebrating our 10th anniversary season in this revitalized neighborhood,” said Anne Levinson, chair of the Storm’s ownership group. “By being an anchor tenant for a neighborhood designed to reuse industrial buildings and locating near our home court at KeyArena, we are reinforcing the Storm’s commitment to sustainable business operations and lessening our environmental footprint.”

The Storm will lease over 12,000 square feet in the Interbay Building from the Freehold Group.  The building is located at 3421 Thorndyke Ave West, about one mile north of the new Whole Foods shopping center.

“The Storm’s move is the most recent recognition that Interbay is a unique location in Seattle where one can experience the opportunity to grow, be creative and tread lightly on our planet,” said David Bolin, cofounder and principal of Freehold.

Freehold has been in Interbay for more than ten years. The developer is working to revitalize the area, combining with its project partners to build a pedestrian-friendly community of industrial, office, retail, research and development, and entertainment businesses, along with residences and open spaces.

Last year, the Seattle City Council approved zoning that preserved the industrial and mixed-use component of Interbay while increasing heights to allow for the construction of multifamily housing and retail services.

Freehold says the Interbay Building was “a dump on its last legs” when the company purchased it 11 years ago.  The building was renovated in 2000.

The womyn of the STORM are such an inspiration to young women, I extend a big welcome to the neighborhood.

I hope they will become involved in activities locally and inspire young people to work hard, play hard, and enjoy life. This is a major announcement and this from someone who isn’t particularly a follower of sports. Bravo.

It’s a way of describing the other gender without using “men” common among feminists…

Lesbians kicking balls around. This should be Seattle’s official sport.

The Storm is a wonderful team that should be fully supported.

I went to college with Anne Donovan at ODU, and supported her and the team all the time she was coaching. She has 4 Olympic Gold medals, and other team players also have Olympic Gold. I don’t see members of the Storm in trouble with the police or drugs, or threatening the community to tax Seattle to the brink with another fancy stadium.

I take my daughter to the games, and love the fact that it is good clean fun, players giving 110%, and she has some class act role models to look up to.

So if this was to be the official Seattle sport, I’d support it 100%! I wish the new coach Brian Agler and all the players a great season!
