Magnolia shows up in the Seattle Times Rant and Rave section more than most neighborhoods for some reason. Today one of our neighbors is having problems with dogs in her yard:
Rant To the Magnolia dog walker who stood by and watched as her off-leash mutt trampled all over my front lawn and garden. When I advised her that her dog needed a leash she just stood there on the sidewalk and ignored me. FYI dog-walker lady, there is a leash law in Seattle and I’m calling animal control the next time your dog is in my yard.
‘Dog-walker lady’ should be advised that Seattle is cracking down on off leash dogs with increased enforcement and hefty fines.
Anyone else having trouble with dogs running wild in the neighborhood?

Every dog owner thinks that their dog is “special.”
Years ago when my mother had her hip replaced she stopped walking in Discovery Park because she was so terrified by people’s off leash dogs on the loop trail. She was afraid of falling and fearful of dogs since an incident in childhood.
Americans should spend half the time they talk to their dogs talking to their neighbors and it would be a lot more pleasant place to live.
Imagine coming from a poor country and seeing shelf after shelf after shelf in the super market dedicated to dog and cat food. The rest of the world thinks we are nuts.
Seattle has more dogs than children as I recall the statistic and spends more on pet food than school texts.
Oh to be re-born as a pet in American…

Dogs are more loyal than most humans it’s
all about the owner how the dog acts out it’s life. Train your dog and you shall be amazed at how good you will both feel.
As far as the dog loose in your yard is not cool. Animal control has better things to do than a call for a dog without a leash and the owner is near,…..if it was barking
and growling at you then you should be upset!!

Don’t give the dog owner a second chance. If she’s ignoring you now, she’ll continue ignoring you. If the doggy patrol can’t catch her in the act and you don’t know her name or address, taking a picture of the unleashed dog and owner might help.

My biggest concern/annoyance is dog owners who allow their dog(s) to defacate in my yard. Who is a fan of dog poop, anyway? No one. This is terribly irresponsible and rude.

Not sure I understand the divisiveness, and I cannot be the only one that remembers dog doo use to never be picked up (not meaning we need to go back to that… but remember that time?). It seems pretty simple, there’s a law that says dog owners must leash their dogs (and I’m assuming cats as well - yes, I’ve seen cats getting walked on a leash); and if anyone doesn’t follow the law, then make the call.
To blame the dog, or take a hostile tone with or about the dog, or to think that “dogs” are the problem is silly… they didn’t dress themselves for the walk.

I think that if you call the shelter with the address of the dog owner and your complaint, they send out a letter to the owner (assuming they have registered their dog) which is a formal complaint. I’m not sure if this is true, but a neighbor who is a breaker of the leash law mentioned getting a letter. I think he thought I made the complaint…I hadn’t but I was glad someone else had. Anyone know for sure?

The Animal Control will require the name address and phone number of the caller. The specific address of the dog owner must be given and an officer will be assigned to visit the owner . Even for a chronic offender(numerous visits) no citation will be issued unless the control officer can catch the dog running loose. The chances of this are slim to none as it may be days after the complaint before the visit occurs. This is due to lack of staff and no funding to employ more.
