Nickerson changes on hold

March 26th, 2009 · Comments

It appears that the city is backing off on plans to make changes to Nickerson Street.  At a viaduct town hall earlier this week, representatives from the Seattle Department of Transportation said that changes to Nickerson are on hold until they can figure out how the whole north corridor system will work when the tunnel replaces the viaduct.

We first reported last month that the city was planning to reduce Nickerson to one lane of traffic each way and add bicycle and center turn lanes. At an open house earlier this month, many people expressed concerns over the plan and the comment period was extended to April 10.

Now the city is putting a halt to any changes, at least for now. SDOT confirmed that there will be no further action on Nickerson until they address tunnel access issues.

  • This was not a bad idea at all. In fact it was a great one because that street is A) a great connection to Fremont/U district/downtown without forcing bikers to take the uber-dangerous Ballard Bridge, B) only slightly less dangerous than the Ballard Bridge considering the extremely fast driving most people do on it and C) seemed to be a faster fix for the issue than finishing off that South ship canal trail looks like

BUT, I completely agree, getting an agreement with BNSF and finishing off that trail so it is a viable route instead of just ending and then sending riders onto that road is the ideal fix. Why does it seem the city has no issue using eminent domain for homes and small businesses but when it comes to something like BNSF, they're happy to let it languish?

This is good news. It was a bad idea from the beginning.

SDOT finally listened,.....in theory bike lanes could be good but SDOT and BNSF
could figure out an access point at the NE corner of the train yard they could use the trail that runs along the Canel all this and the bikes could be off the main roads!!
