Cougar got to Magnolia ‘by accident’

September 6th, 2009 · View Comments

The question everyone is asking is how the Cougar who was finally captured this morning got to Magnolia in the first place.  This picture shows the cougar with his new tag and tracking collar.

Magnolia residents have been reporting sightings of the cougar to Magnolia Voice since August 28th.  Most of the sightings were in the area near Discovery Park, and he was seen on streets and in driveways nearby. Here’s a link to our cougar tracking map.

While we will never know for sure how he ended up in this area, Fish and Wildlife officer Nicholas Jorg, who captured the cougar, tells us what he thinks is the most likely scenario:

Jorg tracked the cougar with three Red Bone hound dogs, instead of the Karelian bear dogs that had been on the hunt earlier.  The cougar was located on the road that leads to the Daybreak Star Cultural Center.  The dogs chased him up the tree and they were able to tranquilize the cougar and get him into the cage.

Years ago my father & I took a walk through Discovery Park and a big car ran across our path & jumped into a tree. Hearing this story made me remember that. Must have been 8 years ago now.
Glad it was released & didn't cause any trouble to our neighbors.

That must have been some big car. Was it a '79 Mercury Cougar by chance? They were huge.
