Petition to protest cuts in Magnolia Library hours

October 21st, 2009 · 10 Comments

The Friends of The Seattle Public Library group wants to raise awareness about the potential cuts to hours of operations at the Magnolia branch and 20 other neighborhood branches. Vice president of the group,  Jennifer Johnson-Fong, will be collecting signatures on a petition this Thursday, October 22nd from 10 am to 12 noon on the sidewalk outside the Magnolia branch.

Johnson-Fong says the petition will show the Mayor and Seattle City Council their opposition to any closure or reduction in library hours.

The proposed operations budget would mean the Magnolia branch would be closed on Fridays and operate on reduced hours at 35 hours a week – all year.  It also means another one week furlough.  The schedule for the library would be open on Monday and Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Friday, open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sunday.

Thanks Magnolia Voice for getting the word out to the Magnolia Branch patrons. Magnolia Voice readers, please pass this along to your friends and family and stop by. I'll probably have a big multi-colored umbrella. Look for me on the sidewalk outside.

Jennifer – do you have a place online where we can add our names to the petition if we're not able to come by tomorrow?

I totally support this petition and am against cutting library hours so make this suggestion as constructive criticism.
Thursday afternoon from 10-12 only? You're going to need a lot more signatures than you'll be able to gather during one 2-hour block on a weekday if you hope to have an affect. I am sure your time is limited, but if you're going to do this, why not ask for help and volunteers to stand outside that branch every hour it is open for a full week?
I'll happily volunteer my time for a period when I am not at work.

Who cares about libraries and some of the basic and essential services that a proud city should be obligated to provide for its citizens? Let's just keep electing officials that continue to build more useless infrastructure (South Lake Union Streetcar and the inevitable tunnel!!!) that caters to corporate and special interests! Let's just keep thinking about the $900 million and all the inevitable cost overruns!!!!

Man, I am beginning to really despise this city. Very sad.

Maybe we just all need to have a good laugh. Is this a joke?

Our taxes just keep going up and services are continually on the decline.

The Seattle Public School District is a big joke and now our libraries are following suit. But that tunnel is going to be great (as a monument to the decline of our once great city).

Seattle – a city for corporate and special interests, NOT families.

    We are out of here.

Thank you Magnolia Voice and Magnolia Library patrons! It was great meeting you all and thank you for signing the petition. Thanks too to my fellow Friends of The Seattle Public Library board member and Magnolia resident Joan Abrevaya for helping me collect signatures. Taking action is the most important way to make a change in this proposed budget, so please tell your friends and family in Seattle. Here are two easy ways to help:

If you didn't get a chance to stop by please consider emailing Seattle City Council http://friendsofspl.wordpress.com/2009/10/02/sa

and/or signing our Facebook petition http://apps.facebook.com/causes/petitions/282

    Thank You Magnolia!
