    Dear Representative Carlyle:
    Dear Bryan Bissell:
Following up on the brief phone conversation I had with Bryan Bissell Thursday afternoon,
I am re-sending e-mail that was sent out Election Day …

    Tuesday afternoon,
    Election Day,
    November 02, 2010

    Dear Representative Carlyle:

Enclosed below are our last e-mail exchanges in January on the chance you might remember my name.

Congratulations on running unopposed. That takes a bit of the tension out of election day.

I am intentionally sending you this e-mail on Nov 2, knowing you might not get to it for a day or so. I know you will be in Magnolia this Sunday, although your website states the day as 11/8. Sunday is 11/7. However, rather than elbow my way to the front of the line to shake your hand, I would appreciate it, if we could arrange a one-on-one cup of coffee with just the two of us — at your convenience, time and date — preferably in Seattle.

If Olympia is the only option I have to arrange a one-on-one with you, I will take it.

In either case, I would need to know your preferred exact time, date and place.

I will be out of town from Thursday, Nov 18 to Sunday, Nov 28, visiting my family

in Coeur d’ Alene for Thanksgiving. Other than those eleven days I am at your disposal.

Obviously, I have something specific in mind. Tomorrow — Nov 3 — is the beginning of the 2012 election season. More later …

Immediately below — after my closing — are our last two e-mail exchanges.

    Sincerely,
    J. R. (Jim) Joelson

Jim, thanks for your note. Check out my blog about Race to the Top fund the other day. http://www.reuvencarlyle36.com.

I am working very hard to try and get the RTTT application as strong as possible on all levels. Your frustrations are legitimate but we can’t give up.

Of the 500 points in the competition, charter schools are worth 30. My point is that if we’re not even going to try to make the application strong let’s at least do everything else to get us to 475.
    Reuven.

    Friday afternoon,
    January 08, 2010

Dear Reuven Carlyle: (cc: Jim Spady) …
You may not remember my name, but prior to the Democratic primary I sent inquiry e-mails to you and Burbank. You answered, as well as responding to my follow up. I asked you some tough questions. I did not agree with all of your positions, but in addition to the fact you responded to my e-mails, I was in essential agreement with most of your views, as well as your philosophy. From my perspective, your experience in the private sector was important.

Enough of the preface. Why in hell is Washington state lining up with the losers before submitting our proposal for “Race To The Top” educational funds from the feds?

Is this because the teacher’s unions are still sucking their toxic thumbs over the fact that a Democratic President and his Education Secretary, ( Arne Duncan ), support Charter Schools? It is a bloody crime that organizations claiming to support educational excellence — in addition to protecting individual teachers — are some of the biggest detriments to improving American education. In light of Obama and Duncan, the teacher’s unions have no place else to go.

I don’t believe they would be comfortable with the right-wing hysterics currently controlling the GOP.

What in hell is the Governor and her aministra-tion thinking? We are a state with great economic dependence on high-tech industries and exports. We need educated kids. We need education and training availability for adults who have lost their jobs or are unemployed.

Having been in both parties in my lifetime as a voter and political professional, I have loyalty to ideas and philosophies, not to parties. Currently, I vote Democratic almost exclusively, because the modern Republican Party is a right-wing disaster area. But I gotta tell ya, the Democratic Party and some of its leaders do not make it easy to be a supporter, never mind an enthusiastic supporter.

    Sincerely,
    J. R. (Jim) Joelson

    Early Wednesday afternoon,
    January 20, 2010

    Dear Reuven Carlyle:
    (360) 786-7814
Your Town Hall call was interesting. I did receive the message. If I had been here, I am not certain I would have participated in what we used to call a “party line” in a previous millennium. However, your efforts could be a good sign for ground level contacts, particular after the Massachusetts debacle. It is important for Democrats to be genuinely interested in the attitudes of voters, aside from Precinct Democrats and party regulars. If the interest is just cosmetic, because the Dems are running scared, it will be ineffective.

Right-wing complaints about elitist liberals are justified. Conservatives are not correct about many things as far as I am concerned, but they are right on the mark on that score. Martha Coakley was a perfect example of an out-of-touch limou-sine liberal, who not only did not understand the voters, she was not particularly interested.

Regardless of party, elected politicians are often arrogant and contemptuous of the public. ( A contempt the public often deserves. ) However when Democrats reveal that contempt, while arguing for policies that allegedly benefit those same people, they come across as double-talking phonies. This is beyond liberal and conservative.

In my lifetime the worst political campaigns have been run by Democrats. It’s a long list. Some of those campaigns were not winnable, ( e.g., Mon-dale vs. Reagan ). However, how you lose in politics is often almost as important as how you win. Martha Coakley now joins McGovern, Mon-dale, Dukakis, Grey Davis and others on the “never-to-run-again-list.”

Currently, most of the the Republican Party represents the worst aspects of conservatism, corporatism and fundamentalist religion. It is important for the Democratic Party to succeed. To do that Democratic candidates have to remove their respective heads from where the sun never shines.

Repeating the last paragraph of my last e-mail: Having been in both parties in my lifetime as a voter and political professional, I have loyalty to ideas and philosophies, not to parties. Currently, I vote Democratic almost exclusively, because the modern Republican Party is a right-wing disaster area. But I gotta tell ya, the Demo-cratic Party and some of their leaders and spokes-people do not make it easy to be a supporter, never mind an enthusiastic supporter.

    Sincerely,
    J. R. (Jim) Joelson
