Coyote spotted on 40th Ave West

November 11th, 2009 · Comments

Magnolia Voice reader Rick wrote to warn neighbors about a coyote he saw Wednesday morning.

I was outside my house this morning at 5:00 a.m. and as I was cleaning the street drain across from my property I noticed a Coyote walking down 40th Av. W. at the 5400 block.  The Coyote continue to walk down the middle of the street headed north on 40th and then disappeared on to the hillside (Discovery Park) above the street.  The Coyote did not seem frightened by my presence and it may be something that needs to be reported to your readers, especially ones with pets.

If anyone else sees the coyote, let us know in comments below.

That's Mr. Clean vacuuming his flower beds at 5:00 am that saw the coyote.

Coyotes are part of the new urban wildlife eco-system and pose ZERO danger to anyone, small pets may be in danger but last time I checked it was illegal for your pets to roam the streets anyway. Coyotes should be managed (as in kept track of to ensure their numbers remain low and that they do not become rabid and maybe even caught and sterilized to keep the population down-not hunted).
We need to work WITH nature not against it~

unfortunately, toddlers/young children seem to be targets:

Would hate to see something happen at a park, school or daycare in Magnolia.

Well true--that is very serious of course. I have a toddler and do I want her eaten by a wild animal? Of course not--nor do I want any child or adult to be attacked by any wild animal..
From that article though and what struck me the most is that these animals are lured into our neighborhoods by us--by us leaving our cats or dogs all day and night outside, feeding the birds, not properly securing trash etc. etc.....they are just going where the food is and if we all just readjust our thinking a bit..they can stay and we can be safe-

You can place blame where you wish, it doesn't change the reality of the situation. People do what they do, and animals do what they do. To pretend each is something it isn't is fool hardy.

A person being attacked and killed by a coyote is even rarer that rare! Is posting from huffingtonpost to suggest that residents of Magnolia are in danger from a coyote in the neighborhood? They are a part of the urban reality throughout the American West.

Check out this link to a story of a 19 year old woman recently attacked and killed by coyotes.

Seems that one must assume that a coyote or two are a part of the normal Discovery Park ecosystem and should only be "dealt with" if they bother hikers as was the case with the one a few months ago.
