Resident awakens to burglars inside home

Just after 3 this morning, a man woke up after hearing voices inside his home in the 2900 Block of 25th Avenue West. As he began to look around, the suspects fled with several unwrapped Christmas gifts. When officers arrived, they scoured the area with a police dog up to West Dravus St., but they said they we’re unable to find the suspects. They did find, however, Christmas gifts dumped a few yards away. The homeowner was unable to get a good look at the suspects, but investigators say they were able to identify some evidence at the scene which they’ve provided to burglary detectives.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.

What's up with the recent uptick in crime in our beloved hamlet lately? Is there anything we can do to have the police patrol more or set up a watch system? It's quickly approaching a tipping point.

I hate to break it to you, but the Seattle Police don't really patrol per se. Seattle polices on the cheap by having a police force half the size of any other US city this size, and has 1/5th the number of police per 10k residents as NYC. The way they get away with this is by depending on 911 calls to dispatch police. The police you do see driving around are usually on their way from one call to the next and will only “patrol” on those instances when they aren't backed up with calls and have actually taken their breaks instead of working through them.
Call the council. Call the new mayor. Let them know that this isn't acceptable and that we need more cops so they can actually have the sufficient number to do their job. Did you know we still have the same number of police that we did when Seattle was half it's current population?

Video Cameras are the answer. We need to set up a network of video cameras at the three entry/exit points to Magnolia.

Video cameras are an excellent idea. And, as stated, we need only three. If it became common knowledge that all cars entering or leaving Magnolia were recorded by camera the disincentive to burglarize in Magnolia would be a major deal. Let's get on it with the cops.

Magnolia might as well as become a gated community and pay homeowner fees to staff the entry points if CCTV's are installed.

Vandal-proofing cams are not guaranteed (as with anything to secure) – rocks can take out the lens, spray paint or something more stickproof cover the lens' up…etc.

What if the burglaries/vandalisms are an inside job within the community? Cams wouldn't be cost-effective then.

More vigilance neighbourhood block watches need to be in place. Get to know your neighbours and put together block parties even if you live in apartment buildings surrounded by other apartment or condo structures…
