New mailbox in The Village

December 26th, 2009 · 59 Comments

A Magnolia resident has gotten US Bank to approve adding a mailbox to its ATM drive through at 3124 W. McGraw St.  Melanie Smith has been working to obtain the new mailbox after construction forced the boxes behind the Post Office to be removed.

Pending approval by the Post Office, US Bank has agreed to put the mailbox in the bank drive through area.  There are still a few hurdles before the mailbox can be installed, including the fact that a normal size mailbox will be too tall for the concrete island at the bank.  The legs may have to be cut off to make it work.

The other snag is that once a new mailbox is in place, another one in the area must come down.  There are eight locations considered for removal: 3054 28th Ave. W., 3655 34th Ave. W., 2809 Thorndyke Ave. W., 4223 26th Ave. W., 1897 Magnolia Blvd., 4001 Gilman Ave. W., 4019 21st Ave. W., and 3211 W. McGraw St.  Smith has been petitioning the neighborhood to get an additional box in The Village for a year now.  She supports removing the box in front of the Post Office on McGraw.

This mailbox was installed in the parking lot of Magnolia Park last year.

That mailbox was put there because of my hard work essentially bombarding the Postmaster of Seattle into not ignoring our community. I distributed flyers in the cold and posted signs throughout the neighborhood. It is ridiculous they removed the ones they did without a game plan. I rarely pass the one by the tennis courts without seeing someone using it.

Rather than put another box a the US Bank why not get a second pick up at the box that is much safer to use by the tennis courts without disturbing the pedestrian flow on 32nd W? I see major issues with that spot and additional cars making turns from that drive-through. I appreciate Melanie's work on this but I think the plan is ill-conceived when we are trying to hard to make the village more walker friendly and have done so much to slow traffic down to do so.

I'd be willing to bet the mailbox in front of the Post Office get a lot of use. Who wants to wait in line just to mail a letter. Plus, it's walker-friendly. Keep that one.

    • magnoliaj

You don't have to wait in line to mail a letter. There are two drop slots just inside the door which is open 7×24.

  • BillyBilly

Mentioned nowhere is the real issue: pickup time. The original drive-through behind the PO had a late-day pickup; the tennis court box is noon. This forces business owners and others to park (or double-park) and go into the post office for their end-of-day mailings.

    • Val

No one is forcing them to double park. They can drive 2 blocks, park, and walk their self-important butts 2 blocks to the PO and 2 blocks back.

      • BillyBilly

Comments made, no doubt, by someone who's never started or run a real business.

        • Drew

BillyBilly, owning a business doesn't exempt you from being a good community citizen. You don't get to doublepark, inconvenience everyone, and feel good about it because you're running a business! Find a parking spot and walk to the post office.

          • BillyBilly

I always park when possible. When there's no spot close, I'll double park and will continue doing so at mailing time until the po restores the late pickup. And there's nothing you can do about it, certainly not via your self-righteous lecturing.

Starting a business and creating 2 dozen local jobs is considered good citizenship by most non-socialists. But to stay in Seattle requires basic infrastructure like this. The mailbox is a small thing but illustrative of how Seattle becomes less business (eg jobs) friendly every year.

  • EnduroDriver

Not sure I see what the problem is with the drive-up mailbox in Magnolia Park? Especially if installing a new one is going to eliminate a walk up box.

  • DB

I am tired of all the double parking in front of the Post Office,…it has been going on for years. That is what is making the Village even more unsafe. I am all for two Mailboxes at the park and a late afternoon pickup like before what gives. The PostMaster should be doing his job!!!! Not Us!!!!!! If he can't do his job then we all need to get him to moveon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Priscilla

The postmaster is a woman and her sister lives in Magnolia!

I asked why they would replace two boxes with three pick up times with one large box with only a noon pick up and received no reply even though I sent it with a first class stamp. I sent a letter to the postmaster general of the US and received not even a canned reply. The blue box by the tennis courts is often overflowing with people who have mailed checks and stuff them into the slot anyway! Alas this story might tell the tale:

Here's the contact information for Ms. Nash if you want to give her a ring-ee ding-ee and tell her that we are sick of the reductions in service:
    Seattle Postmaster :
    Ms. Katherine Nash –
    P.O. Box 90401- Seattle, WA 98109

When I was in Hawaii recently there are three drive up boxes in one small town within two miles of one another—interesting indeed.

Now does anyone have insight into the empty buildings next to the US Bank that are owned by Ko Investments? Isn't there some way to at least commission an art mural to enhance the 'hood instead of that ugly brown plywood. Doesn't anyone know this guy Terry who owns these store fronts?

Yes I am a rebel but I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and work for change, hope you are too!

    Yours in memory of Ursula…

  • MCR

I asked a postal worker at the Magnolia branch why the last pick up at the park was around 12p instead of 5p. Didn't they have to drive right past that park on their last run? There was something about how that box gets picked up by someone else who comes from across town. Are you kidding that's crazy! That park is perfect for a 5p or 6p pickup. Let's make it happen!

  • boeingbabe

see – that one is installed correctly for driver side use. The one at the Ballard Post Office (17th between 57th & 58th) isn't and there are daily near miss accidents as people cross the centerline to use it.

  • frank

It would be a good idea if that building corner and busy sidewalk weren't there. Wait, that means it's a bad idea.

  • mailrocket

Oh, man, crazy mailbox lady is online! Sweet! Since reading one of her petitions up at Ace, my wife and I often play “spot the crazy mailbox lady” when we're up in the village. You go, Ms. Quixote.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
