Discovery Park housing demolition underway

Work has started at the former Navy Capehart Housing complex in Discovery Park. The first step is to remove hazardous materials, including asbestos, from the homes. They also plan to use the homes for fire and police department training exercises before they are demolished. The work is expected to continue through this summer.

After demolition, the 22 acres currently used for housing by the Navy will be returned to the park. The plan is to create habitat that is typical of Discovery Park, with a variety of meadows, forest thickets, and vegetation.

I'm really happy about the upcoming habitat project on these 22 acres. It's a win for people and wild creatures that inhabitat the park.

I wish I could say the same about SPRD's infamous plan to convert 30+ acres of Fort Lawton into dense, overpriced SF homes and condos in the quiet neighborhood along 36th Avenue West at a time when there is a glut of empty condos all over town and in arrogant defiance with SPDR's own Discovery Park Master Plan.

I do hope that the fine residents of Magnolia aren't surprised when the wildlife that will inhabit the new preserve does, on occasion, wander outside the forest. I can only hope that this won't spark a “manhunt” of sorts when a coyote scares Muffy and Buffy when they're out for a stroll.

Given the cougar and the bear we had last year, I think we can handle a coyote. Magnolia residents are quite use to the fact that we have a forest for our backyard.
