Nickerson Street Diet: Day 1

July 26th, 2010 · 92 Comments

This was supposed to be the first day of work on the controversial Nickerson Street diet. But as of 11am, there was no sign of any work being done at all.

SDOT update at 2:30pm: The contractor plans to mobilize today and set up the no parking signs. Either this afternoon or tomorrow they will begin preliminary layout of the new channelization.  Once they have completed the preliminary layout, SDOT will review and approve the layout prior to the permanent pavement markings.  Grinding or removal of the existing pavement markings and installation of the permanent pavement markings are scheduled to begin on Monday, August 2.

The first phase of work also involves putting in new concrete panels at Etruria Street and new curb ramps in various locations. Then, crews will resurface the asphalt pavement on Nickerson between Etruria Street and 4th Avenue North. Once the paving project is finished, Nickerson will get a facelift that has divided the community.

The scene today.

Between Warren Avenue N and 13th Avenue W, the new roadway will have only one driving lane in each direction and a center two-way turn lane. There will be an uphill bicycle lane, and a downhill sharrow. Pedestrian crossing improvements, including new marked crosswalks, will be installed at 12th Avenue W, Cremona Street, and Dravus Street.

image

Normal working hours will be between 7am and 4pm. Grinding off the top layer of asphalt and repaving of the roadway is expected to occur at night and is scheduled to take a total of 3 days during the first and second weeks in August. Here is the work schedule:

  • July 26 until first week of August – New concrete panels at Etruria Street and new curb ramps in various locations
  • Two days during the first week of August – Asphalt grinding (pavement removal)
  • First and second weeks of August — Roadway base repairs and utility adjustments
  • One day later in the week of August 9 – 13: Asphalt pavement overlay
  • First three to four weeks of August – Remove and replace channelization/pavement striping
  • Last part of August – Finalize work and clean up

You can follow the project on SDOT’s webpage.

So sad about this! This was the only way I could reliably get to Cap hill for my 5:45 class in under an hour. My only other options were Mercer and Denny.. both a joke by BUS or CAR at that time of the day. .
And the answer is NO, I don’t want to ride a bike to school after I get home from working 9 hours.. I just dont! Respect that!
I think it may simply be time to leave this city.

  • Justin

This is a shame. It is already a pain on that street during rush hour and when the bridge opens. I can only imagine how bad it will become!

  • Mike D.

Out with the old, in with the new. This is a great move for all travelers. Slowing the speed to the intended limit is long overdue on this dangerous stretch. Thank you SDOT for being proactive.

  • chris

super excited, nickerson needs a facelift and the pedestrians, bikers, students, LQA families and residents and businesses will all be better off.

naen, this won’t significantly reduce your travel times… as for alt. route to cap hill from magnolia: 15th>elliott >wall>2nd>pike

i do this daily, takes less than 30 minutes. avoids mercer/denny.

  • Seattle757

Makes me angry that my primary route to work is going on a so called “street-diet”. This street is going to become a nightmare when the bridge goes up. Instead of making it easier for people from Ballard and Magnolia to get to and from their communities, Major McMumbles is smoking by creating congestion. Critical Mass and the Cascade Bike Club flood the public meeting and they don’t even live in our part of town.

Enough! Can’t wait for McMumbles to be kicked out of office!!

  • mikeg

“makes me angry that my primary route to work is going on a so called “street diet”

so? grow up. find an alternate route. find an alternate form of transportation. take some anger management classes.

“This street is going to become a nightmare when the bridge goes up. ”

um, this street is ALREADY a nightmare – especially for people living there, and when the bridge goes up – but the area to be changed won’t affect that, the fremont/nickerson nightmare won’t be affected by this.

“Instead of making it easier for people from Ballard and Magnolia to get to and from their communities, Major McMumbles is smoking by creating congestion. ”
oh, you mean like the congestion on stone way? oh wait, argument fail… it is really easy to get from ballard to I-5 via leary or 50th. this will be a significant quality of life and safety improvement for the people that live along nickerson and queen anne – are you saying they don’t count just because you live in ballard or magnolia?

“Major McMumbles is smoking by creating congestion. ”
classy. and again, this won’t create congestion.

“Critical Mass and the Cascade Bike Club flood the public meeting”
as is their legal right, you fascist.

“and they don’t even live in our part of town.”
guess again, a lot of us do.

“Enough! Can’t wait for McMumbles to be kicked out of office!!”
you would be in the minority, you’re probably a republican. i’d hate my life, too.

  • Naenmagnolia

MikeG – haters be hating…. you sound angry yourself.
Everyone here is so INTOLERANT in the name of being tolerant. Everyone is so one sided, high and mighty.

  • Seattle757

    MikeG,

I need anger management classes because I don’t support the road diet for Nickerson? Did I strike a nerve with you because it seems you are the one who needs one with your outburst.

Since Nickerson is already a nightmare as you pointed out, you see no problem with making it even more of a mess? I should just ride my bike? Is that your answer?

What great city planning that is- let’s create more congestion and if they don’t like tough, take an alternative form of transportation!

You sure haven’t been out on 50th during rush hour or during the weekends when congestion is a nightmare, plus why would you care. Your Answers seems to be ride a bike. What an egocentric selfish view. Are you a member of Critical Mass or the Cascade Bike Club? Just because I don’t support them doesn’t make me a fascist.

I have no problem when people go to their communities to talk about issues affecting them. I have a problem when people who are not affected by the situation decided to rally troops from all across the city to get what they want when it is not their communities being affected.

You sure seem to be speaking for a lot of us as if you are the majority, if that was true then it wouldn’t be so controversial.

So I guess since I don’t support this road diet I must be a “fascist”, have “anger management” issues”, and I must be a freaking “Republican” who “hates my life”!

Way to go MikeG, or is it Mayor Mike McGinn? Trust me, I’m not the only Democrat who wants to see McMumbles (or you) kicked out of office.

The answer to fixing this regions transportation issues is not by creating gridlock. It is by creating efficiency by moving the city via cars (yes cars), public transportation (bus, light rail, trolleys), pedestrians, and bikes (yes even bikes).

You provide efficiency by creating alternatives that are dependable and proven. McMumbles utopia dreamworld of turning Seattle into Shanghai is doomed to failure. You don’t fix one problem by creating another one.

  • captainbarky

    Well said, Seattle 757.

  • mikeg

no, you need anger management classes because something as simple as changing a small segment of a road for safety improvements makes you ‘angry’.

the only nerve you struck was apparently how out of touch and moronic your little outburst was.

this won’t make nickerson any more of a mess. just like stoneway, fauntleroy aren’t any more of a mess. my answer is find an alternative route or form of transportation if taking an additional 30-45 seconds because you can no longer speed through nickerson to the traffic light at the fremont bridge makes you ‘angry’.

i take it you have zero experience in city planning. this doesn’t create more congestion – this won’t create more cars on nickerson, it will still be the same number of cars.

i have been on 50th during rush hour. it’s not too bad, yes the light @ greenlake can be really bad, but it’s nothing more than a slight annoyance. i take it this light makes you angry, too?

nowhere did i say ride a bike. my view is the opposite of selfish – i am for pedestrian safety, biker safety, and transportation options. it would seem the selfish, egocentric view would be the one that only autos have a priority for moving around the city. now that’s an asinine, self-serving and short-sighted policy.

i’m not a member of critical mass… no one is – there are no leaders, riders are ad hoc. i’m not a member of CBCEF but i support their mission. the fact you don’t support their right to speak their voice at meetings, that is what makes you a fascist. and a hypocrite. there is a large biking community in ballard and magnolia. since when was rallying like-minded people from other neighborhoods illegal?

i never said i was the majority. i just know i’m on he correct side of the issue. the controversy is a fabrication from CO2 loving liars.

if you want mcginn ‘kicked out of office’ you’re probably a DINO, and probably so your friends won’t dislike you. the utopia mcginn references is copenhagen, not shanghai.

  • Seattle757

So MikeG, I’m now a Dino because I want McGinn out of the Mayor’s Office? Keep digging yourself a hole there with your assumptions because of how I feel about a particular street project that affects my community as well as many others in our area.

Let’s see, I’m a young guy barely in my 30’s who spends most of my weekends in the Mountains enjoying nature. I want my city to have a reliable mass transit system. I want light rail throughout our city. So far I sound like a person who would love McGinn! Fortunately I don’t have a narrow vision like McGinn trying to destroy every SDOT project because bikes are not this city’s primary mode of transportation.

I wish Seattle would take a page from Los Angeles and see how that crazy car-loving city has been able to build up almsot 80 miles of light rail in 20 years with 50 more plan by 2016 meanwhile all we have done is 14 miles in 10 years because of all the bickering and rhetoric. We sure love to make fun of LA, but somehow they are trying to fix their congestion and their light rail/subway system is now the 3rd busiest in the country.

Usually a Dinosaur is a person who doesn’t want change and is old fashion and won’t budge to make things better thinking things will just fix themselves if you do nothing.

Here instead of us doing the best not to become the most traffic congested city in the country, we are creating congestion with the “road diets”. Tell me MikeG, where do you think this cars will go to, are they just simply going to disappear?

When the bridge goes up, we don’t sit there for 30-45 secsonds. You can be sitting there for up to 20-30 minutes and that is car or bus.

You want me to take another route? Sure, lets send the traffic into the neighborhoods instead of keeping the traffic on an a major arterial like they should be. Yeah, it sure makes our neighborhoods safer.

How do you think the neighborhoods of Madrona or Highland Park; for example, had a group rally people from all across the city who don’t even live there flood the neighborhood meeting so that a small group gets what they want? Basically outsiders demanding a community do something they want? That is wrong and because I feel don’t way it doesn’t make me a fascist or hypocrite. That is the equivalent of me getting a group of friends and sticking my nose in your home and telling you what I want even though it doesn’t affect me.

No, I’m not a city planner, but I use common sense and being “angry” at an issue doesn’t turn me into Mel Gibson with his anger management problems. Time for you to get out of your box and take a look around you and what is happening to this beautiful city of ours because of people with a narrow vision of what this place should look like.

  • Michelle Kelley

I’m disappointed by this. Seattle is in need of its surface streets because traffic is so bad with all this water/bridges. This was the only good way to get to downtown or Westlake for me. And NO, I will not be forced to cycle because the mayor cycles. I can appreciate the bus but I’m not getting on a bike for anyone because they deem it efficient.

  • mikeg

DINO = democrat in name only. as in, you’re not for transportation options and your love of mcmumbles. so you’re only a democrat because your friends would ostrasize you.

“Fortunately I don’t have a narrow vision like McGinn trying to destroy every SDOT project because bikes are not this city’s primary mode of transportation.”

how many SDOT projects has mcginn ‘destroyed’? mcginn’s working to make transportation OPTIONS a viability in this city, to make it better. but i can see why you’d think the 8 billion dollars in single occ vehicle transportation the state is trying to force on seattle is a good thing.

the reason we only have 17 miles (not 14) of light rail in 10 years is because of people like rob mckenna, who worked hard to kill it and when that didn’t work, make it ineffective (and then complain about it being ineffective and a waste of tax money).

road diets haven’t created congestion. they haven’t forced drivers through neighborhoods. the same number of vehicles will be driving down nickerson, which it can accomodate. don’t believe me? how many lanes does nickerson start out at by the ballard bridge? hint: it’s NOT 2.

people that don’t live in madrona but want to affect how things are aren’t ‘outsiders’ and thinking that citizens of seattle don’t have any say of what goes on in their little segment of the city kinda does make you a fascist.

and that’s FAR from you sticking you nose into my home. seriously, man, your analogies and understanding of basic traffic issues are really awful.

the only narrow vision here are those car-centric, anti-safety, anti-pedestrian and anti-bike folks who want a great city but don’t want to make small, negligible sacrifices to get there.

  • Ashley

Hey, mikeg and seattle757, can you take all your baiting and name calling offline? The anger, righteousness and childishness of both of you got tiresome long ago and is counter-productive to a discussion of the issue. The pros and cons of the road changes will be much clearer a month after the work is finished, maybe once that has happened we can all have this discussion again based on facts and real life experiences rather than on theories and anger and fear.

  • That’s the ticket!

This is sooo smart. Why didn’t we think of this earlier? In fact we should fix all our roads this way. I propose “dieting” I5 down to one lane for both North and South! Maybe a Ferry diet is in order too – they could just start taking cars from Seattle and not back. The possibilities are endless! The rest of the world is sure to follow.

  • Seattle757

Ashley, I have the right to disagree about not liking a city project. Now if MikeG wants to go on his name-calling because he doesn’t agree with me not liking the street-diet he can go ahead, but I’m not going to sit here and take that garbage.

Maybe you would, but it’s because of people not speaking up that projects that communities are against get done because no one speaks up. Now maybe it’s 50/50, but I can speak out and my opinion doesn’t make me self-righteous.

Seattle doesn’t have big boulevards, we have a lot of 2 lane arterials with a few 4 lane ones and slowly we are turning these arterials into parking lots sending traffic into neighborhoods.

  • http://Magnolia ghostinprint

Mikeg…..you need to take a “Miss Manners” course on how to talk to people! I hope you don’t have children who are looking up to you on how to communicate with people. Your behavior is not a good direction to follow……..be nice, it will get you farther on your bike with training wheels!

  • Michael

Ahhh…Magnolians. Choose to live far from everywhere, but complain that it takes for ever to get there.

  • Xian

I haved lived on Nickerson Street for 13 years.
Nickerson, while seriously lacking curb appeal, has been a cheap and centrally convient place to live in this town. It is also a rarity in Seattle: an actual FUNCTIONING arterial.
No more. Traffic backups and gridlocks will be the norm, exponetially beyond anything that we see up till now.
All this is being done for the benifit of perhaps 150 or so people who commute on the street by bike in warm weather (far, far, fewer in the winter months). The other 99.9% are screwed. The bitter irony is that there is a perfectly good (and way under-used) bike trail that runs parallel to the street. It covers about 90% of the length of Nickerson.
Think Nickerson is bad now? It about to get much, much worse. This will be an unmitigated traffic nightmare 24/7.

  • Hugh

How soon we forget. These comments are from the PI back when the Stone Way diet was being proposed. They sound awfully familiar, don’t they?
    http://www.seattlepi.com/soundoff/comment.asp?articleID=329219

Anyone want to argue over the results?
    http://www.publicola.net/2010/05/24/study-shows-stone-way-road-diet-improved-traffic-safety/

The simple fact is road diets have made our streets more efficient. You have to be willing to give your emotions a break and look at the numbers before freaking out.
    http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/cascade/library/roaddiettable.JPG

In every case 4 lane streets were converted to 2 lane streets. And in every case average daily traffic increased. Now why would that happen if people didn’t want to take those routes anymore? Wouldn’t they have found a better way?

  • Seattle757

Last time I checked Stone or 24th street didn’t have draw bridges to deal with and there are many ways to get around both those streets if traffic gets bad.

Nickerson has the Fremont bridge at one end and the Ballard Bridge on the other. If you want to avoid the traffic you have to head into the neighborhoods and you can’t head north because you’ll end up on the water unless you are on a Duck Tour.

Only other choice, head into the hill and watch your previously quiet street turn into a de facto arterial.

  • mikeg

    “an unmitigated traffic nightmare 24/7.”

    uh, over exaggerate much?

  • Nick

Don’t like the “new” 2 lanes? Do as I do and drive on the sidewalk. No cars, no bikes, very few pedestrians….maybe an occasional SPU student, but they are quick on their feet. And like the bike-freaks, just run right through any red lights at the Fremont Bridge end. ‘Been doing it for years and have only one ticket, which they laughed out of traffic court!

  • Yayoi

If the problem really is speeding, Seattle Police can simply set up a speed trap and that will immediately solve the problem, and make $$$ for the city. They do it everywhere else.

Seems to me people are being dishonest. This really has nothing to do with pedestrian safety, nothing to do with speeding, nothing to do with any of the stated reasons people are in love with this project.

This is about a utopian hatred for the automobile, a self-righteous sense that what one small group thinks is good for everyone, and too many people with too much time on their hands.

I wish I could afford to live in a nice home in QA so that I could ride my expesive racing bike to my downtown job, pretending to be Lance Armstrong, so full of my own virtue. But I require my car to get around to work so this little game a few people are playing will have a real negative impact on my ability to get to work and provide for my family.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog. If you look at their simple layout plan, you’d think it was all about just keying in a departure and arrival airport, and you get your low-cost Asia airfare right away.

Hi – really good web site you have made. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to publish a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor in chief for a merchandising firm. I have always enjoyed functioning with computing machines and am attempting to learn code in my spare time (which there is never enough of lol).

This is a shame. It is already a pain on that street during rush hour and when the bridge opens. I can only imagine how bad it will become!
