Morning update

November 24th, 2010 · 15 Comments

We set a new record low temperature overnight with 14 degrees recorded at SeaTac.  Many of the roads in Magnolia are clear but side streets and hills are still icy this morning.  Here is the latest (as of 8a.m.) from city services:

Roads

  • Currently the City has 17 trucks with salt spreaders and two flusher trucks deployed:
  • · Snow routes are in good condition.
  • · There was no significant re-freezing of cleared roadways during the past 24 hours.
  • · There are no significant problems on the snow route network.
  • · The Alaskan Way Viaduct and the West Seattle High Rise Bridge are bare and dry.
  • · Focus is on reopening closed roads. The Seattle Police Department and SDOT are working to review roads currently closed and will update the list online.
  • · The City will continue the same level of deployed vehicles for the morning commute; focus will be on efforts to prevent re-freezing, address trouble spots on Level 3 routes, and bring more roads off the closed list.
  • · Because of the possibility of precipitation today leading to the formation of black ice tonight, some roads will remain closed.
  • · 24 hour shifts will continue through Thursday, November 25.

Garbage pick up:

  • · Garbage, yard waste and recycling collection have been postponed in Seattle for a second day, due to dangerous road conditions; icy side streets prohibit safe collections. There will be no residential services on Wednesday, November 24.
  • · Collection services for commercial and multi-family accounts will be available on a limited basis Wednesday, November 24, where access allows.
  • · Customers whose containers were not collected on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this week will have them collected next week on their regularly scheduled pick-up day, and will be allowed to set out double their normal amount of garbage, yard waste and recycling at no additional charge.

Magnolia Community Center:

  • Will operate from 10a.m. to 5p.m. today for drop in activities.
  • School Age Care Programs, athletic programs and scheduled recreation programs and classes are cancelled.

Library:

  • · All locations of The Seattle Public Library, including Magnolia, will be open from noon to 5 p.m.

Discovery Park:

  • Discovery Park Environmental Learning Center  will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today for drop-in activities.

Just wanted to give you a shout-out for your timely reporting. Thanks this blog has been very helpful!

The city should really do some better outreach to inform those people here (California ones that is) about how snow and ice works.

1: Bridges may FREEZE before roads.

2: Salt is generally not effective when temperatures drop below the 20′s and 10′s.

3: 4 wheel drive is not a universal pass to drive wherever.

4: Consider chains or snow tires.

5: Use good judgement. Don’t go out if you don’t have to. Consider the weather on your return commute.

6: If you for whatever reason abandon your vehicle, leave your contact information on the windshield (name, telephone #).

7: It’s better to park a distance away and walk than to try to gun it and speed up an icy hill. That goes to you hipsters in Queen Anne and Capital Hill.

I would say, growing up in Wisconsin and being continually shocked by the response to snow here, that the #1 thing to keep in mind when driving in snow is:
    SLOW DOWN
Everything should be done with at least 1/2 the speed you normally would do it unless the roads are crystal clear. And with black ice, it’s hard to tell that.

Whys it got to be BLACK ice huh? I see where this is going…

But yes, slowing down is important. I think people got too used to speeding in the rain.

Roads up around the water tower are still very slick and icy. Don’t see that changing until tomorrow when hopefully warmer weather and rain may allow everyone to travel to their Thanksgiving destination…safely.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
