One week left for cookies

Troop 40978 was well-represented this morning in front of Starbucks.? Their biggest seller? “Thin Mints,” they say unanimously. This red-headed trio is selling boxes of cookies to fund scholarships for Girl Scout camps, and raise money for their own Magnolia troop.?Chaperoned by a couple of bundled up moms, these girls were out in blustery weather singing impromptu jingles about the cookies.? “Girl Scouts is so much fun- we get to be with all of our friends,” says Tess, who is in her second year of scouthood.? When asked about the appeal of Girl Scouts, one mom said “This organization is great- it lets girls be girls, teaches self-reliance, and self-awareness.”
Cookies are available for one more week.? If you want to support these local kiddos-but don’t want the sweet treats to go straight to your waistline-you can buy boxes and they will ship them to soldiers overseas with their “Operation Cookie Drop.”

  1. We had a delightful Girl Scout come to our door for an order weeks ago, wrote a check, and haven’t seen her with our cookies since. ?Anyone else in the neighborhood suffer a similar fate?

  2. I had a girl scout come take a pre-order at my house too. and yes I did prepay. got cookies delivered a week ago (or so) no problems.?

  3. The girls are still out delivering pre-orders. ?Sometimes they go out 2-3 times to try and catch people at home. ?Please be patient, your cookies will get delivered!

  4. It is too bad that the Girl Scout organization doesn’t instill healthy eating values on its young members by having them sell a product that is organic and healthy for those buying. When is this country going to wake up stop supporting products that contribute to obesity and rising health care costs? It’s too bad the parents do not stand up and set an example.?

    1. I don’t think girl scout cookies is a contributing problem to obesity in America. I think video games, Ipads, and all the other electronics kids use is a major factor!!?Girl scout cookies are a tradition that will never end…

      1. There in lies the problem. “That is the way it has been done and we’re not going to change”. Good work Girl Scouts et all!

    3. AJ, I think you have a great suggestion.? Let’s remember this is a once a year snack or treat, not a primary item to eat regularly.? I am not a Girl Scout, nor do I participate in this organization, but I do purchase a few boxes each year to support my friends and neighbors children.? I did find this from the GS website in answer to your concerns (if this really bothers you, rather than rain on these young girls parade, why not take it up with the GS organization directly?):

Q: Don’t Girl Scout Cookies contribute to the childhood obesity problem?
A: Girl Scout cookies are sold for a short time every year, and are considered a snack treat. As with all treats, they should be enjoyed in moderation.
Starting with our youngest members, the Girl Scout organization promotes a healthy lifestyle for its girl members, which includes a well-balanced diet and plenty of exercise. Our health and fitness programs encourage girls to adopt healthy fitness and eating habits early in life and continue them into adulthood. Girls are also taught to consider ingredient contribution to their overall diet and portion size when choosing snacks.
In addition, the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) released a research review entitled Weighing In: Helping Girls Be Healthy Today, Healthy Tomorrow. Weighing In addresses various underlying causes leading to the epidemic of obesity and of being overweight among children and adolescents and the lifestyles, culture, and behavior that have contributed to this condition. Read more about this research review.

    4. This is the reason why women grow up feeling self conscious about their appearance, esp. their weight! You don’t see Boy Scouts learning about portion control and ingredient contribution. I don’t think it’s the cookies that are the problem. The problem is that everywhere BUT the US, scouts are scouts whether or not they are a boy or girl. In other countries they are not segregated and engaging in completely different activities.
