Volunteers needed to give Magnolia seniors a lift

July 7th, 2013 · 2 Comments

Here’s your chance to do good right here in our own neighborhood. Magnolia’s senior population is in need of volunteers willing to spend some time driving them to important appointments. Hilary Case, Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator for Senior Services’ Transportation Program says the program is a lifeline for our elderly:

Senior Services’ Volunteer Transportation provides vital rides for Magnolia seniors. Using their own vehicles, volunteer drivers help older adults maintain their independence by taking them to necessary medical appointments. Clients appreciate their improved access to opportunity. The program schedules on a week-by-week basis.  Volunteers need to have some weekday daytime availability, but it does not need to be consistent.   Drivers typically provide one ride per week, yet they can do more or less.

This is a flexible volunteer opportunity-the program schedules on a week-by-week basis.  Volunteers need to have some weekday daytime availability, but it does not need to be consistent.   Drivers typically provide one ride per week, yet they can do more or less.

Aren’t they eligible for Metro Access? It looks like they go everywhere in Magnolia.

I contacted them. They will pay for mileage, but sadly that doesn’t allow for parking and the time spent at the doctors. I do community service work elsewhere tutoring for $10. an hour, so it is difficult to provide this much needed service without any compensation, but hope that there is someone who could…. who has no need of any income from it. It appears to be a good cause.
