Despite the damp weather, the Seattle 2013 Breast Cancer Walk to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation wound its zany way through Magnolia Sunday on the road to the finish line at Seattle Center.
Cheered on by the local Jimmy Buffett fan club, Parrot Heads of Puget Sound, walkers of all stripe and costume slogged, honked, and shouted along the route through our neighborhood, by way of Ballard and Husky Stadium. Sights included Seattle Police officers volunteering their time on bicycles decked out in pink regalia peddling along with participants.
Vans and other vehicles with pink lettered signs and loud party music swooped in to rescue the exhausted from further duties.
At the top of the Garfield Street bridge, the Parrot Heads passed out cups of Gator-itas, a mixture of Gatorade and blended ice, to soothe the weary.
?We?re always a little oasis on the route,? exclaimed Karen Walter, a spokesperson for the group. ?We love helping them out. The Gator-itas have quite the reputation.?
A reported total of 1400 participants walk in the charity event to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The 60 mile journey takes place over a 3-day period of 20 miles per day. Each walker must raise $2,300 to join the walk, according to the official website, www.the3day.org. Money raised helps fund community education and outreach programs.
