KOMO helicopter crashes near Seattle Center on Broad Street

UPDATE: Per Mayor Ed Murray via Twitter: ?It is my understanding that the site may be closed for several days. Seattle Public Utilities are cleaning up the fuel spill.?

Traffic Impacts: Per KING 5?s Tracy Taylor: Southbound 5th Ave is closed between Mercer and Denny, could possibly re-open this afternoon. Broad St is closed between Denny and 5th Ave and could be closed 3-5 days.

At about 7:45am this morning, a KOMO TV helicopter crashed on Broad St, near the Seattle Center. Per the Seattle Times, it appears the helicopter slid off the landing pad on Fisher Plaza , hitting several cars when it hit the ground.

Per SDOT, surrounding streets are closed.

Seattle Fire has confirmed via Twitter that two people died in the helicopter crash. One person was taken to Harborview ?with critical injuries.

The crash site remains an active scene, and SPD expects the investigation to take several hours. SPD has asked that people stay away from the scene.

A? KOMO-TV helicopter crashed at Fisher Plaza and the TV station, just south of the Seattle Center on Broad Street about 7:45 a.m.

The helicopter, which apparently slid off the Fisher Plaza building, hit at least three cars when it hit the ground, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

One person in one of the cars, a 37-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to the hospital, according to the fire department.

Seattle Fire and police have closed some streets in the area.

A large plume of dark smoke rose from the crash site and could be seen from a great distance.
