No raised crosswalk or all-way stop-flashing beacons to be installed at 32nd Ave W and W Raye

It looks like we are at the end of the line for the hotly contested intersection of 32nd Ave W and W Raye St. As we reported in June, parents, community members and?Magnolia leaders came together to ask SDOT for a?solution for the dangerous crosswalk.

SDOT?has completed its latest review of the crosswalk, and has concluded that neither an all-way stop, nor a raised crosswalk, are merited at this point. Instead, it will install flashing beacons to warn drivers to slow down to 20 MPH during school drop-off and pick-up. The lights are to be up before the start of the school year.

From Magnolia Safety:

An application for a Neighborhood Parks and Street Fund (NPSF) grant to have a raised crosswalk installed at the intersection had passed through the Neighborhood District Council for review by SDOT, but the cost would have been $140,000 (far more than the NPSF cap of $90,000). Also, according to their findings, ?the crosswalk would have to be moved away from the intersection. This would place it behind the utility pole, decreasing visibility.? Read their report on the crosswalk here.

A community effort to have the city install an all-way stop at the intersection was also researched, and rejected.
