Magnolia Veterans Day activities

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “The Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11 became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans? Day, a holiday dedicated to living American veterans of all wars.

This week Veterans are honored here in Magnolia with activities throughout our neighborhood.

Thursday ? 9 a.m. Lawton Elementary Veterans Day assembly.
2:45 & 3:15 p.m. Blaine School Veterans Day Assembly

Friday ? 8 a.m. Help decorate McGraw Street in the Village with U.S. flags. Create thank you cards for our current military and veterans. Bring your extra Halloween candy to share with them at Veteran?s facilities, all to be hand-delivered later. Please meet on the sidewalk near the post office.
9 a.m. Gather at the post office flag pole to show your appreciation for the military and our veterans. The Magnolia Boy Scouts will provide a color guard, and the Magnolia American Legion will give a short presentation.

The federal holiday is Friday. Please fly the flag.
