Lil’ monsters and fairies hit The Village

November 1st, 2008 by Abner

The merchants in The Village welcomed trick or treaters of all ages last night with candy and fun for everyone. The weather was not too bad and it did not keep the crowds from converging for Halloween treats. Here are some of our favorite photos with a special thanks to Magnolia Voice reader Kathy for sending us her great pictures.

Scenes from the Fishermen’s Fall Festival

September 20th, 2008 by Geeky Swedes

Hundreds braved the rain at Fishermen’s Terminal to celebrate the return of the North Pacific fishing fleet at the annual Fishermen’s Fall Festival.

One of the most popular events is the wild salmon filet challenge.

These guys are fast. The salmon, by the way, went straight on the BBQ. Yum. Other attractions included live music, demonstrations, a trout pond, oyster art, fish prints and face painting for the kids.

Kids could also build their own wooden boat. What could be cooler than that?

J.P. Patches, perhaps? Due to the rain, the turnout looked a little lower than average, but great fun was had by all.

Bike the Bluff Saturday

September 4th, 2008 by Gladys

Looks like the weather is going to be perfect for Bike the Bluff on Saturday.  Its year 17 for this annual event that gives you the chance to bike or walk a loop around Magnolia.  You decide if you want to tackle four miles or the six and a half mile course.  Following the ride there is a neighborhood barbecue.

The open course ride will begin and end in the East playground of Catharine Blaine School on 32nd Avenue West. Registration is available on the day of the ride at 10am or online @ www.bikethebluff.org (Payment due on the day of the event) . The course officially opens at 10am and officially closes at 2pm.

Proceeds from this year’s Bike the Bluff will help fund scholarships, so students at Catharine Blaine K-8 can attend two environmentally friendly science camps. These camps are designed to get children back outside to learn about and enjoy nature and help them appreciate, understand and respect their environment.

When to watch the Blue Angels

July 28th, 2008 by Gladys

The Blue Angels are back in town this week for Seafair, and they can be seen from many outlooks around Magnolia. They don’t begin their official flights until Thursday, but you may see them buzzing around before then.

(Cool photo taken from the Space Needle a couple years ago by Jim Purbrick on Flickr.) Here is the flight schedule for those of you who want to see them or just need a little advance warning since they can be pretty loud.

Thursday, July 31: 9:45 a.m.-12 noon & 1:15-2:30 p.m. (Circle & Arrival Maneuvers to become familiar with the area.)
Friday, August 1: 1:30-2:30 p.m. (Practice Show)
Saturday, August 2: 1:30-2:30 p.m. (Full Show)
Sunday, August 3: 1:30-2:30 p.m. (Full Show)

By the way, did you know that The F/A-18 can reach speeds just under Mach 2, almost twice the speed of sound or about 1,400 MPH?  Impress your friends with that little tidbit.

Summer festival coming this weekend

July 27th, 2008 by Gladys

Make your plans now to attend Magnolia SummerFest and Art Show this weekend. It will be held on Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2.

Summerfest has been the highlight of summer in Magnolia, in one form or another, for over 55 years. The parade has run for over 30 consecutive years.

Throughout the weekend, thousands of people visit the festival to enjoy food, entertainment, the largest children’s parade in Seattle, talent contests and concerts, art vendors and a juried art show. There will also be a sidewalk sale, outdoor movie and baby crawling race. (The 2008 Summer Festival poster was designed by Jennifer Kuhns and will be available for sale at the festival.)

The event runs from noon to 10:00 pm on Friday and 10:30 to 10:00 pm on Saturday. For a full schedule, visit the website at www.magnoliaartshow.org
