Firefighters called to community center

April 4th, 2011 by Geeky Swedes

UPDATE 4/6:   The gym is now open again.  The fire was electrical and the panels have been replaced.

A report of a fire at the Magnolia Community Center attracted a large response of fire crews this evening, but as we arrived a short time later, they were already packing up the hoses.

No report on exactly what triggered the response, but it appears to be minor.

Thanksgiving day fire in Magnolia leaves 1 dead

November 25th, 2010 by Geeky Swedes

Updated 6 p.m. An 91-year-old woman died early this morning in a fire in a single-family home at 1926 Clise Pl. West in Magnolia.  Neighbors say that the woman lived alone.

Firefighters responded at 5:12 a.m. and discovered the house well-involved in flames. Neighbors told rescue crews that an elderly woman lived inside. Firefighters performed a search and rescue, and found the woman in a bedroom, said spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick. “She was unable to survive the smoke and flames,” Fitzpatrick said. Investigators believe that materials placed too close to a baseboard heater sparked the fire.

This is the home here, which is difficult to see from the street.  When firefighters arrived smoke was pouring from the front door.  The fire department said that ice on the stairs also posed a challenge for firefighters.  About 40 firefighters responded to the fire and one firefighter suffered minor burns and was taken to Harborview for treatment.

Major fire closes Ballard Bridge

May 6th, 2010 by Geeky Swedes

12:30pm UPDATE:  Seattle Fire investigators say the fire was sparked by a transient who was cooking.  Damage is estimated at $100,000.

Firefighters were called out just before 11:30p.m. after a report of smoke coming from underneath the bridge. When crews arrived on scene, they found a fire underneath the bridge in a storage yard. Four small boats, a truck and wooden pallets were destroyed before the fire was extinguished about 20 minutes later. Because of the location of the fire, the bridge sustained soot and fire damage. According to Seattle Fire, Seattle Department of Transportation inspectors have inspected the integrity of the structure.

The Ballard Bridge is now open after it was closed as a major fire burned underneath the south end of the structure late Wednesday night.

The bridge was closed for two hours as crews inspected it for damage from the fire.  Our sister site, MyBallard.com was on the story all night.  Coverage here.

Brush fire in Interbay

November 27th, 2009 by Geeky Swedes

UPDATE:  We got this information about the fire from Magnolia Voice reader Paul;

My friend Bob and I were riding by on bikes when the fire started.  It appeared to be two transients that let a camp fire get out of hand, in the middle of the hill side halfway between Thorndyke and the bike trail below.  We rode down to the trail and took an iPhone video as the two and their dog came down out of the woods.  They made the comment their “campfire got out of hand”.  It appeared to be burning itself out in the damp brush, but the fire department opened up the fence above on Thorndyke to get in there and get it all out.  Luckily, there is a fire hydrant right at that spot along Thorndyke.  We left contact info with SPD in case they wanted the video.  Thankfully it didn’t appear that either of them nor the dog had been injured or burned.

Firefighters have responded to a brush fire at 2501 Thorndyke Ave. W just after 4 p.m., and there’s a large plume of black smoke visible from the east side of Magnolia and 15th Ave. We’ll let you know if there’s any damage to report. (Thanks Michael for the tip.)

Fire in Magnolia

July 30th, 2009 by Gladys

If you heard lots of sirens this afternoon it was for this fire at 2014 West Bertona.  That is near the Boxcar Tavern on the east side of Magnolia.

The call came in a little before 2pm this afternoon.  It was reported as a fire in a building.  There are a number of industrial and residential units in that area. There was a large fire department response and medic units were called to the scene but we do not have word of any injuries.

Magnolia Voice reader Aaron sent this picture from a nearby office.  Thanks Aaron and Ann who emailed us from nearby.
