Magnolia In Motion is officially over and the results are in. The goal was to have 300 participants and the final tally far exceeded that with 454 Magnolia residents participating. The group says that the participants saved almost 83,000 miles of solo driving and 4,100 gallons of gas. Janis Traven participated all ten weeks and won the final prize. Other participants received gift certificates from 20 Magnolia businesses. Magnolia in Motion was developed by Sustainable Magnolia with the goal of showing that walking, biking, carpooling, and taking the bus are viable alternatives.
Here is what one of the participants surveyed had this to say about the program: ”I joined Magnolia in Motion because I liked the idea of being supported with bus tickets and alternative travel options. My truck died on Labor Day, and my 2-person family has decided to not replace the vehicle. We are traveling with our one car, as well as utilizing public transportation when and where available. Just wanted you to know that your program influenced my habits, and has led me to the decision to become a 1-car family!”
Sustainable Magnolia’s Transportation Team received two grants totaling nearly $30,000 for the ten week program that started in late July.

Sustainable Magnolia was also working at SummerFest to decrease the leftovers from the festival with recycling bins and compost bins. In the past, all of the waste has gone into the garbage and last year SummerFest produced 25 cubic yards of waste. This year, volunteers set up waste stations to help people sort their waste appropriately.
