Meet Juan Diego and Uno!

November 1st, 2009 by Gladys

The Seattle Animal Shelter provides a temporary home to more than just dogs and cats, and we want to introduce you to some of these shelter residents who are currently looking for a home.

Uno is an English Spot rabbit who would like a quiet, settled home where he can become part of the family.  He is very handsome with his salt and pepper spots. A little bit shy and quiet at first, once he gets to know you he really enjoys hopping all around and all over you. He sometimes will give bunny kisses.  He loves to eat greens, carrots and apples. He is neat and tidy and uses a litterbox.  Check out the bunnycam to see Uno in action.

Another current shelter resident is Juan Diego, a Columbian Red-Tailed Boa.  Don’t count him out because he’s a snake!  Juan Diego is very inquisitive and likes to watch what’s going on around him.  He has brown and red markings and a black tongue.  He is young and not very big yet, average full-grown size for his species is 6 to 9 feet long and some have grown to be 12 feet long.  He needs a home with someone who really loves snakes and has previous snake experience.  You can check out Juan Diego and all the shelter animals here.

Meet Fred!

June 12th, 2009 by Gladys

This week’s featured pet from the Seattle Animal Shelter is Fred, a friendly Guinea Pig who lives with his best fiend Mickey.

Like most Guinea Pigs, Fred and Mickey are very social and like to hang together.  They must be adopted together.  Fred is orange and white with lovely, soft longish fur.  He is very friendly, and will lick you and make silly Guinea Pig noises while you scratch his back. Fred’s friend Mickey is tawny colored and is also very friendly and cuddly.

Fred and Mickey are seeking a family who can provide a roomy cage, proper diet, daily cleanup and gentle handling. They will try their best to keep clean, fastidiously grooming themselves with their front teeth, tongue and back claws. Guinea Pigs – particularly the long-haired breeds – require frequent brushing and combing to stay clean and tangle-free.  They enjoy having tunnels to crawl through and platforms to climb on in their cage as well as supervised play time with their people.

Fred and Mickey are herbivores and in addition to commercial Guinea Pig food, require a lot of Vitamin C that comes in a variety of deep green leafy vegetables such as kale, collards and romaine lettuce.   They also enjoy fruits, including melon and apple slices on occasion.

Come and visit Fred and his friend Mickey at Seattle Animal Shelter today!

Meet Petey!

June 5th, 2009 by Gladys

This week’s featured pet from the Seattle Animal Shelter is Petey, an athletic, happy 5-year-old cat with a shiny black coat and soulful, intelligent golden eyes. He has big “catcher’s mitt” paws that have to be seen to be believed! He would love to join an active family where he can give and get lots of love and can show off his many skills. Petey fancies himself a hunter – give him a pinch of catnip and a toy mouse and he will entertain you with his antics for hours. Petey enjoys the company of humans.

When you greet Petey at the shelter he butts his head against your hand, begging you to keep petting him. When you try to leave, he reaches one of his big paws through the cage bars to try to detain you.

Petey ended up in the shelter after his owner left him with a “pet sitter” and never returned to claim him.  He is ready to settle down with someone who will give him the love, attention and stability that he deserves.

Black cats are often passed over as “too plain” in favor of animals with a more striking appearance. In Petey’s case, that is a big mistake because he will make a wonderful addition to any family.  He is past the destructive kitten phase but still has plenty of playful energy and years of life and love to give. He has lived with other cats and dogs and should fit easily into just about any household.  He has wonderful house manners, is neutered and microchipped, and is ready to take home.

Visit the shelter’s website at www.seattleanimalshelter.org to learn more about Petey and other animals currently available for adoption.

Meet Zoey!

May 29th, 2009 by Gladys

This week’s featured pet from the Seattle Animal Shelter is Zoey.

It is impossible not to fall in love with Zoey as soon as you meet her! She gets so excited that when her tail wags her entire body follows. She has a magnetic personality and is full of love. She will cuddle all day and night if you let her. Zoey is that dog who lights up the room and makes you smile.

Zoey quickly befriended her foster brother and the cat that she lives with. She has done well with other dogs and cats she has met. She is very smart and catches on quickly. She’s never had an accident in the house and patiently sits and waits to be let into the house when done playing in the backyard.

Zoey is a 2-year-old pit bull terrier mix and needs plenty of play time and exercise. However, she is also content to relax on her bed and chew her favorite bone.  Zoey has an allergy that has made some of her hair fall out. She doesn’t seem to notice and it doesn’t slow her down any. It is likely she will require special food and continued care from a vet and/or allergist.

Zoey is being adored in one of the shelter’s wonderful foster homes and is not currently at the shelter.  If you would like to meet Zoey, download a Dog Adoption Application from www.seattleanimalshelter.org and email it to the Foster Dog Program at adoptionreview@gmail.com. Or you can pick up and drop off an application at the shelter.
