Make friends with a storm drain

October 30th, 2008 by Gladys

Winter is on its way.  That means rain, fallen leaves, and clogged storm drains.  The City of Seattle is asking residents to help keep storm drains clear of leaves and other debris to avoid flooding problems. Fall and winter weather often clogs drains quickly, leading to water backups on some roads.

City crews recently inspected 78,000 storm drains around the city and cleaned one-third of them. The city is asking residents to join their Adopt-a-Drain program to keep them clear year-round.  So far 200 volunteers have signed up to maintain 800 storm drains. Join up and you’ll get free leaf pickup, plus everything you need to keep drains clear: gloves, bags, rakes, brooms, safety vests and shovels.    Sign up here or call 206-684-7647.
