New sign triggers objections

A new dry cleaners, about to open in a month on the corner of 34th Avenue West and Emerson Street, is already steaming the neighbors before the first suit is pressed.
Voice readers in the vicinity of the new Magnolia Cleaners sent some hot email to the blog expressing concern over the brightness of the new sign. The one-word ?Cleaners? in brilliant red is attached to the building facing north.
“The tackiest thing I’ve ever laid eyes on,? howled one missive. ?What a horrible eyesore for that corner,? said another.
Clearly, some residents are agitated.
Magnolia Voice caught up with the affable Alan Kim, the owner of the cleaners, busy working on the interior of the space readying it for the opening.
?The LED was pretty bright. I was surprised,? he said quietly. ?I?m sure I can dim it.?
For the last 19-years Kim has owned a dry cleaners in Chinatown that will soon close so the land can be redeveloped. He also owns Greenwood Cleaners and plans on keeping it.
?We are an eco-friendly cleaners,? he explained.
It was noted there is a City of Seattle certification sticker located on the west side of the sign indicating the display is fully permitted.
With a dimmer promised, it?s hoped complaints will soon get ironed out.
