Sync Fitness founder Sara Dean interviews?Sync Superstar, Magnolia mom Connie Olson:

SD-I clearly remember when Connie Olson began her membership at Sync Fitness. She signed up for unlimited classes and started quietly attending class EVERY. DAY. Her commitment yielded fast results. She was serious and dedicated and it showed in her transforming body and her increasingly joyful spirit. Since Connie started at Sync Fitness, she has earned the reputation as our most consistent member (logging over 300 workouts last year), a huge cheerleader for other members, and an overall #sycnsuperstar. She is a huge asset to our community, which is why I wanted to interview her.
SD-Share a little about yourself.
CO-My name is Connie, and I am a 46 year old mother of three ages, 16,13 and 10. I am a part time Speech Language Pathologist with the Seattle Public Schools.
SD-What motivated you to start taking time for more self care/exercise/healthy eating?
CO-After the birth of my youngest two children my Gestational Diabetes symptoms were sticking around.? I was able to lose a little weight and exercise very inconsistently on my own. When my doctor started pushing the idea of introducing meds it was the motivation I needed. I did not want to become dependent on medications.? I told the Doctor to give me 6 months to see what I could make happen. I joined Sync the next week and haven?t looked back.
SD-How have you been able to incorporate self care (gym, healthy eating, acts of self care) into your life and your family life?
CO-I workout first thing in the morning. It helps me set the tone for the day. It is my time. There are no kids needing rides or homework help or errands that can be done at?6AM. ?It is all about me.? I try to use language that is helpful and meaningful to the entire family for healthy eating. My oldest is running in high school so we talk about food to fuel you for a race or help you recover. My youngest two are girls, so I am trying to help them make healthy choices for meals and snack.? We talk about eating things that will keep you full and give you energy for their busy lives.
SD-What has changed in your life/your family life since you started making a consistent, conscious effort to focus on improving yourself?
CO-There is inner power that comes from finally putting yourself first. For many years, what I needed was an afterthought. I had small kids that required all my energy. I have found that when I give myself an opportunity to take time, even just 45 minutes, I am more able to deal with the demands of my children and family. I know that I will have my consistent time every morning that is just for me to get stronger and fitter. As the kids get older, they are doing weights or conditioning for their activities. I have skills, knowledge and advice that I can share from my own efforts.? We have been known to have spontaneous plank challenges or family boot camps!
SD-What are you most proud of regarding your transformation?
CO-The first time I really felt the difference of getting stronger was last winter skiing with my kids. There is a long steep run that they love. I was able to ski it nonstop! My legs felt strong.? My heart and lungs felt strong. I also like the way I look in clothes again.
SD-What advice would you give someone who is feeling intimidated or overwhelmed by the idea of starting to exercise or eat better?
CO-Take a deep breath and jump in. Find someone to be accountable to. It can be a workout partner or even your child. Say it out loud. Give it time to become part of your routine and part of who you are. It won?t happen overnight but before you can imagine, it will be something you miss if you are not able to go!? You don?t have to be an athlete before you begin but you will become one. I grew up in a household where the only class it was permissible to get a B in was P.E. I never played an organized sport growing up. But now I am a Boot Camper and Weightlifter and a Reluctant Runner.
Thank you for sharing your story Connie. The entire Sync Fitness community adores you and admires your hard work! You are an inspiration to many.
